I started my kids with the understanding of money and how it can be used at a very young age.
I asked them to think about what they'd do with a million dollars. They had to write down the five things they'd buy and the five ways they could better their community. Then they started getting the perspective of what money can do. Yes, it can buy you nice things, but beyond that, they start to see their community's needs and the greater impact they can have, which is key.

It is much better if you own your family expectations and you take them in the direction that's aligned with who you are.
I think the best outcomes for next gens are when people own the expectations, but chart their own path to meet them and use the family network platform as a catalyst to make impact.

The money is easy when you’ve had success. You really want to look for true partnership.
How much courage does this person have?
How much integrity does this person have?
That's what you need.

Wealthy families have a chance—and a responsibility—to create more abundance for others.
I hope those with the means and vision will invest in things bigger than themselves—like public spaces, libraries, and institutions—that will be celebrated by everyone and benefit future generations.

We've had some very good governance structures and they've continued to evolve over the years.
For example, we actually set up a family council for the first time, and we met for the first time this year.
So that took 40 years, but we continue to reevaluate and make changes.
